SAN FRANCISCO – Hawai'i Pacific University sophomore
Sven Koenig scored twice in the last 20 minutes of the game to lead the Sharks to a 2-0 PacWest victory over Academy of Art Tuesday at the Beach Chalet Soccer Field.
The Sharks (5-6-4, 5-4-2) collected its second straight win in starting a three-game season ending road trip. Academy of Art (2-13-1, 2-9-0) closed its home season by extending their losing skid to seven.
Koenig, the 6-0 sophomore from Schuerte, Germany, extended his PacWest Conference scoring lead. Koenig now has 19 goals and 41 points in 15 games. The PacWest Player of the Week has five goals in the last two games.
While outshooting the Urban Knights 19-12, the Sharks shot all around the goal until the 72nd minute.
That was when Koenig lit up the scoreboard the first time, getting a feed from junior forward
Josch Cuerten of Cologne, Germany. Cuerten touched the ball over to Koenig to boot it in from five yards out.
HPU added the insurance goal six minutes later.
Sharks senior
Erik Kemsies of Velgast, Germany, chipped the ball in from the far corner for his favorite target, and Koenig headed it into the right corner for a 2-0 lead with exactly 12 minutes to play. Koenig got his conference leading 19th goal of the year, while Kemsies picked up his PacWest leading 10th assist of the season.
Koenig's bid for a consecutive hat trick was foiled when the Urban Knight's blocked his shot off a corner kick with less than 30 seconds to play.
HPU senior goalkeeper
Jesse Kunitomo of Mililani, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama, recorded his second solo shutout of the season to go with a shared shutout. Kunitomo recorded saves on all three of the ArtU shots on goal.
ArtU keeper Kevin Mendez tallied seven saves on the nine Shark shots on goal.
HPU continues the road swing with a game on Thursday against Notre Dame de Namur at Koret Field. Kickoff in Belmont, Calif., is at 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT).
