HPU Basketball Honors Fallen Teammate with Kam’s Helmets Night

HONOLULU (February 17, 2016) – The Hawaii Pacific men's basketball program will honor one of its former teammates via its Fifth Annual Kam's Helmets Night on Saturday, Feb. 20 at Moanalua High School.

Free bike, skateboard and moped helmets will be distributed in remembrance of Kameron Steinhoff, a HPU basketball player who died from a head injury suffered while falling off a skateboard.

Helmets will be distributed at the men's basketball game against inter-island rival University of Hawaii at Hilo. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. following the HPU women's game that begins at 1 p.m.

Following Steinhoff's fatal accident five years ago, HPU established Kam's Helmets in partnership with The Queen's Medical Center's Trauma Center and ThinkFirst Hawaii to provide helmets and increase public safety. To date, HPU has given away more than 1,000 helmets to children, adults, and HPU students. Helmets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Steinhoff, a 2008 Punahou graduate and former Hawaii State Player of the Year, competed in 51 games for HPU and had recently completed his third year of eligibility when he passed away on May 18, 2011. He played for head coach Darren Vorderbruegge, leader of the Sharks basketball program.

"Kam was a dynamic young man and we miss him very much," Vorderbruegge said. "His family and our basketball program are committed to keeping his memory alive by assisting young people here on the Island."
