HPU falls at Concordia Portland 5-3

PORTLAND, Ore. – Hawai'i Pacific University produced three second half goals, but a strong first half by Concordia Portland led the Cavaliers led CU to a 5-3 victory Friday evening at Tuominen Yard.

Concordia Portland (5-0-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the half. The Sharks (0-3-1) came back in the second with three goals, but allowed two more as well for the final tally.

The three goals in the second half are the most scores the Sharks have collected in a game this season.

Concordia Portland blistered the goal, firing 27 shots with 13 on goal. HPU junior goalkeeper Alannah Johns notched eight saves in the match. The Sharks fired nine total shots, with five on goal. CUP keepers Anna Miller and Taylor Cook each posted a save. Cook, who played the second half, allowed all three HPU goals.

The Cavaliers opened the scoring quickly in the 11th minute when Shannon McMahon headed Bobbi Ecker's corner kick into the net at the back post.

CUP added a second goal 10 minutes later on Sydney Van Steenberge's goal from 20 yards out and a third first half tally on Kasey Ames header on a corner kick in the 31st minute.

But the Sharks answered just six minutes into the second half as Maia Angell chalked up her first goal of the year in the 52nd minute. Angell took a through ball feed from Noelle Mercado down the right side of the box to make it 3-1.

The Cavaliers cut the Sharks dreams down with a pair of goals just five minutes apart midway through the second frame. Kyra Radcliffe made it 4-1 with a score in the 68th minute, while Quinn Williams added another in the 73rd minute for a 5-1 advantage.

However, the Sharks would not give in.

Mercado added HPU's second goal in the 79th minute as she beat the defender with a shot from the left end line.

Then the Sharks wrapped up the scoring in the 89th minute as Sara Romo's corner kick set up a header from Montana Logue who recorded her first score of the season.

HPU started a 10-day mainland trip with the contest and will be in action again on Sunday. The Sharks face Saint Martin's at 10 a.m. Hawai'i time (1 p.m. Pacific) at CUP's Tuominen Yard.
