HAYWARD, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University's
Kai Hasegawa scored on a breakaway in the ninth minute of golden goal overtime to lead the Sharks to a 2-1 PacWest win over Holy Names Thursday night at Pioneer Stadium.
The Sharks (1-4-1, 1-0-0) grabbed their first victory of the season with the game winner. Holy Names (0-3-1, 0-1-0) remains winless in 2016.
The game-winning goal was the second score of the evening for Hasegawa, a sophomore forward from Honolulu, Hawai'i/Kaiser. She scored a game tying goal in the 56th minute for the Sharks.
Hasegawa's aim was deadly as she scored on both of the shots she attempted in the contest.
Holy Names had opened the scoring just before halftime when Cecilia Coronado scored for the Hawks in the 43rd minute off a corner kick from Harlie Valentine.
The Sharks also got an outstanding game from junior goalkeeper
Alannah John of Sacramento, Calif./Ponderosa who recorded 11 saves while facing 16 shots.
HPU posted 17 shots, nine on goal with Hawks goalkeeper Vanessa Amaral notching seven saves.
After allowing the goal just before the half, the Sharks came out for the second looking for the opportunity and got Hasegowa's first goal on HPU's second shot of the half.
Both teams peppered the goals after that. HPU had a shot by junior
Sara Romo sail high with just 20 seconds before the whistle to end regulation.
In the golden goal extra period, both the Sharks and Hawks had opportunities slip by before Hasegawa got loose on a breakaway for the game winner.
HPU wraps up its 10-day mainland trip on Saturday in San Rafael, Calif., against Dominican. Kickoff is slated for 10:30 a.m. HST (1:30 p.m. PDT).
