HPU outlasts Dominican 1-0 in overtime

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Hawai'i Pacific University got another heroic performance from sophomore Sven Koenig who scored to snap a scoreless tie in overtime to lead the Sharks to a 1-0 victory over Dominican University at Kennelly Field on Saturday.

The Sharks (2-2-2, 2-0-0) picked up their second straight win, while Dominican (1-6-0, 1-1-0) lost in Pacific West Conference play for the first time this season.

"Dominican is a tough team to play against," said HPU coach Chris Fisher. "They were extremely fired up for the game. I was proud of the way our team matched the intensity and got a gritty win on the road."

Koenig, the sophomore forward from Schuerte, Germany, ended the game in the 96th minute with the golden goal on the only shot by either team in the overtime period. Freshman Christian Porras of Rockville, Md., got the assist on the game-winner when he found Koenig open on the left side. Koenig took it to the center of the field one-on-one and beat Dominican keeper Oscar O'Con.

The game was a rugged battle that was as tight statistically as it was on the scoreboard. Both teams had eight shots in regulation, with the Sharks posting four on goal and the Penguins two before the HPU scoring shot.

Koenig chalked up four of the shots in the game and nearly scored in the 66th minute, getting by the keeper only to have the Penguins collect a defensive save.

HPU freshman goalkeeper Chandler Schur of Fayetteville, Pa., picked up his first career solo shutout, with two saves on the shots. He was also was a part of the combined shutout on Thursday against Holy Names.

O'Con posted three saves to go with the team save for the Penguins.

The Sharks are in action again next Saturday when they visit the Big Island to take on Hawai'i-Hilo in a 12:30 p.m. contest.
