AZUSA, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University saw Azusa Pacific score twice inside of the first two minutes of the second half to overtake the Sharks as APU posted a 2-1 come-from-behind PacWest Conference win on Saturday at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
The Sharks (6-6-1, 2-5-1) dropped their third straight, while the Cougars (6-3-2, 6-0-2) picked up their sixth win without a loss in the last eight contests.
HPU grabbed the upper hand in the first half with a goal from
Ebony Madrid, the Sharks leading scorer, in the 18th minute. Madrid, a sophomore from Porterville, Calif./Ramstein, got a through pass on the right side from freshman
Alissa Lei Walin of Paia, Hawai'i/Seabury Hall, and fired it in from 20 yards off the far post for her sixth goal of the year to give HPU the 1-0 advantage.
The lead held through halftime, but not for long after that.
Just 31 seconds into the second frame, APU's Katelyn Rogers tied the game with a left-footed shot from the top of the 18 to the far left post for her fourth goal of the season. Stephanie Lossau got the assist.
Less than two minutes later, the Cougars chalked up what would be the game-winner. Lossau was the beneficiary of flick passes from Emilie Allum and Rogers that set up a top of the box blast for the 2-1 APU lead. It was Lossau's second goal of the year.
The Sharks did not get another shot on goal in the half of the two they attempted.
HPU goalkeeper
Lauren Spencer, a junior from Oxford, Mich./Oxford, recorded three saves on the 19 Cougar shots and allowed two goals.
Azusa keeper Zoey Bauman posted two saves and the goal allowed on the six HPU shots.
HPU closes its three-game California road trip on Monday as they travel to San Diego to face Point Loma. Kickoff is slated for 10 a.m. HST (1 p.m. PDT) at the PLNU Soccer Field.
