SAN DIEGO – Hawai'i Pacific University kept Point Loma at bay for more than 40 minutes, but the Sea Lions scored once before the half and three times in the second half as Point Loma ripped the Sharks 4-0 in PacWest Conference action at the PLNU Soccer Field.
The Sharks (6-7-1, 2-6-1) fell for the fourth straight contest, while the Sea Lions (6-5-1, 5-3) won their third straight.
Both teams had only one shot on goal in the first 40 minutes before the Sea Lions lit the board in the 41st minute. PLNU's Abbi Swanson got a cross from Jae Kamanu and put it in the upper left corner for a 1-0 lead.
A bit of bad luck for the Sharks came on the Sea Lions second goal just after halftime in the 49th minute. Sea Lion Easton Kawawaki's kick toward the HPU goal was deflected about 10 yards out, changing direction and rolled into the goal to give PLNU a 2-0 lead. It was Kawawaki's first goal of the season.
The score stood until the 77th minute when a foul was called on HPU allowing a free kick for Point Loma. Swanson used the free kick as a cross to Ashlee Smith who finished the play off for her second goal of the season.
The final score came in the 87th minute. Following an HPU foul, the Sea Lions Jessica Taylor sent a cross to Emily Pedlowe who placed it in the upper right corner for her first score of the year to make it 4-0.
The Sea Lions took 12 shots in the contest. HPU junior goalkeeper
Lauren Spencer of Oxford, Mich./Oxford, recorded one save with the four goals allowed.
HPU recorded seven shots with Point Loma keeper Brianna Linnell collecting four saves on the Sharks four shots on goal.
The match ended the Sharks three-game California road swing. HPU returns to Oahu and will face Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complext.
