SAN DIEGO – Hawai'i Pacific University's men's soccer team dropped its third straight overtime contest on Monday afternoon as a header in the second overtime period gave Point Loma a 2-1 PacWest Conference victory at the PLNU Soccer Field.
The Sharks (4-7-2, 2-6-1) played their seventh overtime game in 13 played this season. The Sea Lions won their third straight and have not lost in their last 11 contests.
PLNU's Eduard Gallardo scored his third goal of the year on a leaping header from a cross from Jacob Moreno in the 103rd minute to give the win to the Sea Lions.
The nearly even teams were scoreless at the half, with only one of the collective seven shots by the two squads on goal. That was saved by HPU senior goal keeper
Daniel Arnoll of Verrieres-le-Buisson, France.
The Sharks lit the scoreboard first in the second half.
In the 49th minute, HPU sophomore
Josiah Darland of Eugene, Ore./Sheldon, blasted a shot that ricocheted off of a Point Loma defender and past Sea Lion goal keeper Wiktor Lasota to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead.
But the Sea Lions would get the equalizer in the 58th minute. After an HPU offside, PLNU raced into the offensive end and had a pass rebound off a defender to Tim Siegfried. Siegfried collected and found an open Indiana Fuller to tie the game at 1-all.
The Sharks had opportunities following, but saves by Siegfried and a team save by the Sea Lions kept the contest knotted.
The game became more difficult for HPU in the 62nd minute when Shark Gerrit Arberger was sent off with a red card that left the Sharks down a man the rest of the match.
The Sharks fired four shot in the first extra period, with one on goal that was saved by Siegfried.
The Sea Lions got two shots away in the second overtime, the last being the header from the right side by Gallardo.
The loss was another painful one for the Sharks who are now 0-5-2 in overtime contests this season.
HPU closes its three-game California trip and returns to the island for its final four games of the season in Oahu. The Sharks are next in action against Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
