WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University's men's soccer team battled Dominican (Calif.) for 110 minutes before settling for a double overtime 1-1 tie on Wednesday afternoon at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex in PacWest Conference play.
The Sharks (4-8-3, 2-7-2) played in their eighth overtime contest and sixth double overtime affair, before recording their third tie of the season. The Penguins (4-8-2, 1-7-2) recorded their second straight tie, both on Oahu.
HPU went up early, lighting the scoreboard in the third minute of the game. Senior
Josch Cuerten of Cologne, Germany scored his 10th goal of the season off a ricocheted save of a shot by senior teammate
Dean Phillips of Kahului, Hawai'i/Feather River. Phillips point blank shot rocketed off of DUC goal keeper Christian Lathrop right to Cuerten who one-timed into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The hotly contested game stayed that way until the 61st minute when the Penguins collected the equalizer. Colin Gunby blasted the ball toward the goal from the right side some 30 yards out and near the top of the six-yard box, Diego Vasquez redirected the ball with a header flick at the far post for the score. Vasquez tallied his fourth goal of the season.
The goalkeepers were the story of the match, as Lathrop posted eight saves for the Penguins on HPU's 17 shots, including three saves in the second overtime.
HPU senior
Daniel Arnoll from Verrieres-le-Buisson, France, chalked up three saves with the goal on 11 Dominican shots before suffering an ankle injury with 39 seconds left in regulation. He was replaced by sophomore
Chandler Schur of Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg, who completed the game with two saves against three Penguin shots.
The Sharks take on cross-town rival Chaminade on Saturday afternoon at the Swords home at St. Louis Field. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
