Stanislaus State
The Sharks scored twice in the sixth to tie the game before Leonard's score on the wild pitch in the eighth to beat the host team 3-2.
HPU won the coin toss to bat last, and Stanislaus jumped out in front on an unearned run in the first. After allowing a baserunner on an error to start the inning, Stanislaus' Cassidy Duke followed with an RBI single down the left field line for a 1-0 advantage.
Stan State added another unearned run in the fifth after a leadoff single by Morgan Balestreri, who went to second on an errant throw. After a sacrifice bunt sent Balestreri to third, Nicolette Vizcaino reached on an error that allowed Balestreri to score for a 2-0 lead.
HPU made a comeback in the bottom of the sixth. Leonard led off with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. An RBI double to centerfield by
Kayla Sanchez brought home Leonard. Sanchez stole third, but got caught in a run-down trying to score on a grounder to third by
Noelani Boyer. Boyer was able to reach second on the play and scored to tie the game on
Carolann Toyama's RBI double down the leftfield line.
HPU dodged a bullet in the top of the eighth. In the international tie breaker, Duke was placed at second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ruby Quiralte grounded to Shark shortstop
Sierra Dias who gunned down Duke at the plate. HPU then got a strikeout and a ground out to end the inning.
Sonoma State
HPU used the sixth inning heroics of Walker and Leonard to fuel the comeback to beat the Seawolves 8-5.
Trailing 5-3 heading into the sixth,
Sienna Santiago dropped a one-out bunt for a single. After a second out,
Sierra Dias reached on a fielding error by shortstop Alex Flores. That's when Leonard drove a 3-2 offering to center for a 2-RBI triple. Walker followed by smacking a 3-1 pitch over the leftfield fence to give the Sharks a 7-5 lead.
HPU added an insurance run in the seventh when pinch runner
Kiana Wolfe scored from third when SSU catcher Sarah Langley threw wildly trying to throw out pinch runner Boyer at second.
The Sharks had grabbed an early 2-0 lead as
Mari Kajiwara led off the game with a walk, followed by Dias and Leonard bunting for a singles to load the bases. Walker stepped up with a 2-RBI single through third for the 2-0 lead. But the Sharks left the bases loaded.
Sonoma got all five of its runs in the second as then pitcher Leonard was roughed up by the Seawolves with a single, walk, single to load the bases with one out for Alison Strycula who collected an RBI single up the middle. Then Karly Macadangdang tripled to drive in three for a 4-2 lead and chase Leonard to the outfield. Curry entered and got Jenny Collazo to ground out but get an RBI for a 5-2 advantage.
The Sharks would get one back in the third inning on Toyama's RBI single into right center to score Sanchez and keep the Sharks in the game.
While Leonard allowed five earned runs on four hits with a strikeout in her inning-and-a third, Curry was masterful. Curry scattered three hits over 5.2 innings, with four strikeouts.
