Sharks split games on final day of Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. — The Hawai'i Pacific University softball team downed Cal State East Bay 5-3, but fell to No. 15 Cal State Monterey Bay 6-1 on the final day of the City of Turlock Tournament of Champions.
 
The Sharks (18-16) picked up their fourth straight win with their win over CSU East Bay (20-15) before falling to CSU Monterey Bay (29-4).
 
Junior Sienna Santiago of Eleele, Hawai'i/Waimea highlighted the offense for the two games. Against East Bay, she went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, and was 3-for-5 over both games. Junior Noelani Boyer of Carson, Calif./Banning was 2-for-5 on the afternoon with an RBI, a double and two runs scored, and senior Kayla Sanchez of Corona, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
 
Sophomore righthander Alexis Morales of San Diego, Calif./Mater De Catholic got the win in relief against East Bay, finishing the game allowing just a run on two hits in four innings.
 
The Sharks return home for their next action on Friday as they host BYU-Hawaii at Howard Okita Field in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

The Sharks fell behind 3-2 after three-and-a half innings, but rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the fifth to beat the Pioneers 5-3.
 
Fell behind East Bay in the first as Ashley Allen led off with homer to left off of starting pitcher Emiliee Leonard.
 
The Sharks answered in the bottom of the second as Sanchez singled to start the inning and Boyer doubled her home to knot the score. After Carolann Toyama singled Boyer to third, Santiago rapped a single to center to drive in Boyer for a 2-1 lead.
 
But East Bay retook the lead with a run in both the third and fourth innings, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Tanya Galvan and an RBI double from Courtney Leyba to put the Pioneers up 3-2.
 
HPU pulled back on top in the fourth with as Boyer singled and was on second with two outs. Santiago tied the game with an RBI single down the rightfield line scoring Boyer, and stole second to get into scoring position. Mari Kajiwara followed with a single to right and Santiago plated the go-ahead run when Emilie Portesi misplayed the ball for an error.
 
The Sharks put an insurance run on the board in the fifth when Leonard, now playing leftfield, smashed a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left for her fourth homerun of the season and a 5-3 lead.
 
Cal State Monterey Bay
 
HPU held tight with 15th ranked Cal State Monterey Bay until the Otters plated three in the seventh inning to win 6-1.
 
After playing two scoreless innings, Monterey Bay collected two in the third on a Julia Garcia RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Madison Casto.
 
The Sharks got their only run in the bottom of the third after a leadoff walk by Nicole Viena and single by Santiago. The duo were sacrificed to second and third before Sierra Dias lofted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Viena. Santiago went to third but was stranded.
 
The Otters made it 3-1 in the sixth with an RBI double by Anneliese Lopez.
 
HPU threatened in the sixth, getting runners to second and third, but stranded them.
 
In the CSUMB seventh, the first two Otters reached on hits before pinch hitter Janae Coleman drove a 2-RBI single up the middle and got an unearned run after two errors on a fielder's choice by Courtney Hennings to make it 6-1.
 
Junior righthander Alexa McCoin went the distance in the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits with a strikeout.
