Sharks sweep BYU-Hawaii on Friday

KANEOHE, Hawai'i -- Hawai'i Pacific University never trailed as they swept a PacWest doubleheader over BYU-Hawaii 4-1 and 5-0 on Friday afternoon at Howard Okita Field.

The Sharks (20-16, 9-11) handed head coach Bryan Nakasone his 275th career victory with the wins. The Seasiders (10-24, 5-19) dropped their seventh straight game.

The Sharks were paced offensively by sophomore PacWest Player of the Week Dominique Walker of Whittier, Calif./Saint Paul who continued her torrid hitting, going 3-for-6 in the twinbill with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs scored. Junior Sienna Santiago of Ele'ele, Hawai'i/Waimea was 3-for-5 with two triples an RBI, a walk and a stolen base.

A highlight of the afternoon was in the second game when Walker and junior Noelani Boyer of Carson, Calif./Banning hit back-to-back homeruns off of BYUH's Meghan Wantz.

Jordan Curry (5-6) got the win in game one, while Emiliee Leonard (6-5) picked up the win in the second game.

The Sharks are in action on Sunday when they visit the Big Island to take on Hawai'i-Hilo starting at Noon.

Game One

The Sharks collected runs in the second, third and fifth innings and got out of a sixth inning jam defensively for the 4-1 win.

HPU chalked up the first run in the second on Santiago's first triple of the afternoon that drove in Carolann Toyama with two out.

In the third Boyer smacked a 2-RBI double to centerfield with two out, driving in Walker and Leonard who both reached on errors to up the HPU lead to 3-0.

HPU's final run came when Sierra Dias led off the fifth with a triple to right and scored on Walker's RBI single.

The Seasiders nearly spoiled the game in the sixth inning, loading the bases with two out. Alanna Anderson picked up a run with an RBI single to center, but Katie Didonna tried to get two runs off the hit and was gunned down by centerfielder Santiago's perfect throw to the plate.

Curry worked a perfect 1-2-3 inning to finish the game, striking out eight Seasiders while allowing the one run on eight hits.

Game Two

The second game featured big blasts and a near gem in the circle as the Sharks made it a sweep with the 5-0 win.

HPU collected nine hits in the game that included two homeruns, a triple and a double, while Leonard allowed just three hits in picking up her third shutout of the season.

Santiago led off the Sharks first inning with a triple to left center and scored on Dias' sacrifice fly.

In the third, a leadoff walk by Nicole Viena and a Santiago single lined up a 2-RBI single from Dias for a 3-0 lead.

Then came the fifth. Dias led off with a double to left center, but tried to stretch it to a triple and was thrown out by leftfielder Sarah Captain at third. After a fly out, HPU didn't have to worry about getting thrown out from the outfield. First it was Walker sending a 1-1 pitch down the left field line for her third homerun of the year. Boyer came up next and took a 2-1 offering over the fence in left center for her fifth round-tripper of the season and gave HPU a 5-0 lead.

Leonard, who had allowed only a leadoff walk in the first and a hit in the third, allowed BYUH a double by Makaela Williamson to lead off the seventh. She moved to third on a fielder's choice, but had to hold the bag despite a single, a fielder's choice and a walk to load the bases. Leonard regain command and got Marrissa Harne to tap a grounder back to the circle to end the game.

Leonard finished the complete game shutout with three stikeouts, two walks and three hits to pick up her team leading sixth win.
