Hawai'i Hilo sweeps Sharks in two walk offs

HILO, Hawai'i -- Hawai'i Pacific University lost a PacWest softball twinbill in walk off fashion in both games as Hawai'i-Hilo claimed two games Sunday afternoon at the UHH Vulcan Softball Field.
 
The Sharks (20-18, 9-13) fell to the Vulcans (19-19, 10-12) 3-1 in nine innings in game one, and 3-2 in game two.
 
UHH got a two-run homerun from Brinell Kaleikini with two out in the ninth inning to win the first game, then used a seventh-inning, one out RBI single from Bailey Gasper to win game two.
 
The losses spoiled a big day at the plate by junior Noelani Boyer of Carson, Calif./Banning who went 4-for-8 in the two games and hit her sixth homerun of the season in game one. Freshman Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman, was 3-for-7 with a double and two RBIs.
 
The Sharks return to action this weekend on the mainland, with doubleheaders at Holy Names on Friday and Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday.
 
Game One
 
The Sharks and Vulcans scored a run each early, then kept the game scorless into extra innings before UHH came away with the 3-1 win.
 
HPU got on the board with Boyer belted a 1-1 pitch over the fence to lead off the second inning.
 
The Vulcans evened the game in the bottom of the third inning after loading the bases with two out. Cristina Menjivar singled to center to drive in Maria Steadmon, but Kristen Ishii was thrown out by Santiago for the third out.
 
The Vulcans had chances in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Sharks shut down the threats.
 
In the ninth, HPU got consecutive two out singles from Boyer and Kayla Sanchez, but stranded them on base.
 
The Vulcans picked up two outs in the bottom of the ninth before Steadmon walked. Kaleikini battled to a 3-2 count before getting a pitch to drive over the fence for the walk off win.
 
Freshman righthander Emiliee Leonard of LaMirada, Calif./St. Paul (6-6) took the loss, going the distance allowing the three runs, all earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
 
Cyanne Fernandez (5-3) picked up the win allowing one run in nine innings one seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
 
Game Two
 
The second game was a scoreless duel until final inning and a half where the Vulcans came away with a 3-2 win.
 
The Sharks threats in the first and fourth innings, but left two runners stranded in each.
 
In the UH Hilo sixth, the Vulcans loaded the bases on a walk, a single and a walk with one out. Danielle Pulido hit into a fielder's choice, but an error by catcher Carolann Toyama allowed two runs to score to give the Vulcans a 2-0 lead.
 
The Sharks answered in the top of the seventh. After a walk and a two out single, Dias smacked a two RBI double to centerfield to tie the game.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Ishii drew a one out walk and Mari Kawano singled. Gasper then drove the first pitch she saw into right for an RBI single to bring Ishii in with the game-ending run.
 
Sophomore Jordan Curry of Farmington, N.M./Farmington (5-7), allowed only four hits, but walked six while recording seven strikeouts and the three runs, with only the last earned in suffering the loss.
 
Leah Gonzales (6-5) chalked up the win for the Vulcans.
