PORTLAND – Hawai'i Pacific University scored in the first half, but host Concordia Portland added an equalizer in the second as the two teams finished 1-1 in double overtime at Tuominen Yard on Friday night.
It was the first tie of the season for the Sharks (1-1-1) and the Cavaliers (1-3-1).
The Sharks got on the scoreboard in the first half on a penalty kick by senior
Josch Cuerten of Cologne, Germany in the 42nd minute.
That lead held through halftime until the 61st minute when the Cavaliers posted the equalizer. Reggie Reyes sent an arcing pass from the right corner of the 18-yard box, to Todd Gibbs at the left corner of the six-yard box. Gibbs headed the ball into the net.
Those would be the only goals of the match.
HPU senior goalkeeper
Daniel Arnoll of Verrieres-le-Buisson, France, recorded five saves in the match, three in the second overtime, while CUP's Benoit Bouillant posted two saves.
The hard-fought contest was a chippy one, as the two teams accumulated 46 total fouls with eight cards issued. HPU played the last 10 minutes of regulation and both overtimes with 10 men after
Mario Garcia was sent off after receiving his second booking of the match.
Concordia took eight of their 19 shots with the Sharks down a man, including three of its six shots on goal. HPU managed only two shots in the final 30 minutes of the game.
The leadoff contest of a five-game road trip, the Sharks are in action on Sunday in Lacey, Wash., when they visit Saint Martin's. Kickoff is set for 10 a.m. HST (1 p.m. PDT).
