No. 11 California Baptist Trips Up Sharks 4-3

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University overcame a 3-1 first half deficit, but a goal off a corner kick in the 77th minute led No. 11 California Baptist to a 4-3 PacWest Conference victory Saturday afternoon at Lancer Soccer Field.

The Sharks (2-3-1, 0-2) scored more goals in the first half than the unbeaten Lancers (6-0-1, 2-0) had allowed in its previous six games of the season combined.

HPU had to play from behind early. The Lancers scored twice within 21 seconds in the 10th minute.

The first goal came from CBU's Hugo Gutierrez who settled a pass from Sebastian Wiesboeck and popped it in. Aidan Apodaca also received an assist on the play that gave the Lancers a 1-0 lead.

Following the HPU kickoff, the Lancers Joey Chica took the ball and fed Apodaca, who dribbled through the HPU defense for the one-timer and quickly it was 2-0 CBU.

The Sharks answered the first goal in the 21st minute. Senior Josch Cuerten of Colonge, Germany sent a pass to freshman Lucas Libbra of Alata, France in the middle of the box. Libbra tapped it in for his third goal of the year to make it 2-1.

The Lancers came back in the 32nd minute on a through ball pass from Junior Guerra to Preston Judd. Judd shot to the near post for his third goal this season and CBU was back up by two at 3-1.

A CBU foul set up the Sharks in the 37th minute. Sophomore Christian Porras of Rockville, Md./Rockville sent his free kick cross to senior Yuki Yamamoto of Tokyo, Japan who made it 3-2.

Two minutes later HPU tied the game as Cuerten collect his second assist of the game as he sent a perfect pass through the defense to junior Gerrit Arzberger of Munich, Germany who one-touched the ball past CBU keeper Edgar Benitez for a 3-3 contest.

The game remained tied through the half until the 77th minute when the Lancers got a corner kick. Wiesboeck sent the corner to Guerra who in turned passed to Judd on the far post. Judd headed the ball in for the tie-breaker for his second goal of the game and fourth of the season.

HPU attacked late, with two shots in the final minute of play, with Benitez making his only save of the day on an Arzberger shot and a Porras shot was blocked.

CBU outshot HPU 14-8, with HPU senior goalkeeper Daniel Arnoll of Verrieres-le-Buisson, France collecting five saves with the four goals allowed.
