RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University allowed a goal to California Baptist in the first nine minutes and the Lancers made it stick as CBU edged the Sharks 1-0 in PacWest Conference action Saturday afternoon at Lancer Soccer Field.
The Sharks (4-3, 0-2) fell by a 1-0 score for the second straight game, while the Lancers (4-3, 2-0) remained unbeaten in PacWest play.
The only goal of the contest came in the ninth minute when a Sharks attempt to clear the ball was intercepted by CBU's Hoku Afong. Afong sent it over to Haley Wheelon who volleyed it over the head of HPU goalkeeper
Lauren Spencer from three yards out. It would be the score of the contest.
Spencer, a junior from Oxford, Mich./Oxford, recorded eight saves on the afternoon, while the Sharks had a team save as well off the 27 shots by the Lancers.
HPU posted nine shots in the game, with Cal Baptist goalkeeper Sara Escobedo recorded three saves. Escobedo made two of the saves in the last 18 minutes. Two other HPU shots were blocked by CBU on the forward press.
