Madrid's Hat Trick Gives Sharks 3-2 Double OT Win

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Hawai'i Pacific University forward Ebony Madrid's hat trick goal with two seconds remaining in the second overtime propelled the Sharks to a 3-2 victory over PacWest leader Dixie State Tuesday afternoon at Legend Solar Stadium.

Madrid, a sophomore from Porterville, Calif./Ramstein, who scored in the 19th and 34th minutes, got the game winner off a wing pass from the left side by junior Josefine Von Der Burg of Gothenburg, Sweden, then scored with a shot between the post and keeper for the hat trick.

It was the first hat trick for the HPU women since Erika Ellis scored three goals at Dominican (Calif.) on Oct. 23, 2014.

The Sharks (5-3, 1-2) picked up their first PacWest win of the season, while the Trailblazers (6-2, 2-1) fell for the first time in league play.

Dixie State opened the scoring in the eighth minute off a free kick when Montana Hadley sent the ball into the box and Jill Bennett scored her first goal of the year on a header from three yards out.

The Sharks answered with Madrid's first goal at exactly 19 minutes. Junior Leonicia Lopez of Sacramento, Calif./Christian Brothers centered a pass to Von Der Burg who chipped to the right wing to Madrid who beat the Trailblazer goalkeeper one-on-one.

HPU grabbed the lead in the 34th minute when Madrid scored for the second time. Senior Taylor Cabbab of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell found Madrid with a pass from the right sideline. Madrid dribbled to the right wing and blasted it in from 15 yards out.

The Sharks kept that lead through the half and held it until the 85th minute.

A Dixie State shot was blocked over to Nichole Mertz whose follow shot was into a scrum and taken by Alexa Estridge who fired into the goal to tie the match.

Both teams had shots in the overtime and the Sharks had the last opportunity of the contest.

HPU had a throw-in in the final 20 seconds, placing the ball in the near left corner. DSU briefly gained possession before Von Der Burg took the ball from the Trailblazer defender and sent a centering pass to Madrid as the 10-second countdown was underway. Madrid gathered and shot, sliding the ball between the left post and Dixie keeper Felicity Tarr to win the game with two seconds remaining.

Dixie State outshot HPU 33-13, putting 12 shots on goal. HPU junior Lauren Spencer of Oxford, Mich./Oxford, recorded 10 saves for the Sharks. Tarr posted seven saves against HPU, but could not stop three of the five shots on goal by Madrid.

The Sharks closed its three-game mainland road trip with the win. HPU returns home to host Holy Names at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex Field 5 on Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
