Sharks Snare Seventh Straight with 95-59 win over Argos

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University never trailed as the Sharks rolled over Notre Dame de Namur 95-59 in PacWest Conference action on Sunday afternoon at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.

The Sharks (11-2, 5-1) posted their seventh straight win and hold the longest active winning streak in the PacWest. The Argonauts (7-8, 4-3) lost for the first time in three games. HPU and Azusa Pacific are atop the PacWest with one loss each, but APU has played two more conference games than the Sharks

"We took care of business today," said HPU head coach Reid Takatsuka. "We jumped out to an early lead and kept playing until the buzzer. I'm very happy with the way the entire team performed."

Freshman forward Alysha Marcucci of Melbourne, Australia/Marist-Sion once again led the Shark attack, scoring 20 points, hitting four 3-pointers, dishing three assists and collecting a steal. She was one of six Sharks scoring double figures. Junior guard Janessa Manzano of San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius, added 13 points with three rebounds and three assists, senior forward Jessi Reeves of Coffs Harbour, Australia/John Paul collected 12 points with five boards and five assists, senior guard Spencer Gray of Centerville, Ohio/Centerville just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, while junior forward Gabriella Fotu of Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto added 10 points and seven boards, with junior guard Samantha Lambrigtsen of Oregon, Ill., posting 10 points. HPU almost had another double-double as freshman forward Jessica Harley of Melbourne, Australia/Caulfield Grammar had nine rebounds with eight points.

The Argos were paced by Marissa Caballero with 15 points and five rebounds, while Marinel Alcantara posted 12 points. Aaliya Monroe and Sydney Chase also recorded five rebounds for NDNU.

HPU shot 53 percent from the floor (38-of-72), including 10-of 22 (46 percent) from the 3-point arc. The Sharks also connected on 82 percent (9-of-11) from the free throw line. The Sharks held the Argos to 37 percent from the field (20-of-54), and 33 percent from the arc (8-of-24). The Hawks managed 50 percent (11-of-22) from the line. The Sharks dominated the glass 43-30 and scored 19 points off of NDNU's 17 turnovers. HPU suffered 10 turnovers for eight Argo points.

HPU opened the game on a 10-0 run and never looked back. Reeves hit two free throws and a running jumper, while Manzano and Marcucci nailed back-to-back 3's in the first 3:15 of the game. The Argonauts rallied to cut the advantage to six at 14-8 with 3:11 remaining before the Sharks closed the period with a 10-5 run for a 24-13 advantage.

NDNU scored the first three points of the second quarter to trail by eight at 24-16, but it would be as close as they would get the rest of the way. Marcucci followed with a 3-pointer 20 seconds later for HPU, starting a 12-3 run for the Sharks. HPU carried a 19-point 46-27 lead into the locker room at the half.

The start of the third all but sealed it for the Sharks, as they opened with a 9-0 run that extended to a 15-2 start to lead by 32 points after three free throws by Manzano. HPU held the 30-plus lead until late in the quarter and settled for a 28-point, 74-46 lead after three.

Sophomore guard Starr Rivera of Honolulu/Roosevelt opened the fourth with a 3-pointer to give the Sharks a 31-point lead and HPU never allowed NDNU to get closer. HPU last scored on a Reeves layup with 90 second to play for the final of 95-59.

HPU won't play again until Saturday afternoon when the Sharks open a four-game Southern California road-trip at Point Loma. Tipoff is set for noon HST (2 p.m. PST) at Golden Gym. The game will be streamed live by ESPN 3/WatchESPN as part of the NCAA Division II Showcase.
