WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University and Biola played 110 minutes in rain and on a soggy field before settling for a 1-1 tie in PacWest Conference action at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex Field 6 on Thursday afternoon.
The Sharks (3-4-4, 1-1-2) played in their sixth overtime game of the season. The Eagles (5-3-3, 3-0-1) dropped into a second place tie with Hawai'i Hilo with their first non-winning PacWest decision this season.
Both goals were scored in the heavy rain in the first 22 minutes of the contest.
HPU scored first in the 19th minute when freshman Brittny Ihara of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City sent a centering pass to sophomore Nina Gonzales of Palmdale, Calif./Knight who blasted a shot from 25 yards out for a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles responded three minutes later on a header by Annemarie Alvarez following passes from Colie Martin and Madi deMetropolis to tie the match at 1-1.
Those would be the last scores of the day.
HPU senior goalkeeper Lauren Spencer of Oxford, Mich./Oxford, recorded four saves while facing 16 Biola shots. Eagle goalkeeper Viviana Poli notched six saves against 15 HPU attempts.
The Sharks are back on the pitch on Saturday. HPU is in action under the lights at the Waipio Soccer Stadium against Concordia Irvine. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. following the Sharks men's game against CUI.
