Sharks Shutout Concordia Irvine 2-0

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i –  Hawai'i Pacific University chalked up a pair of second half goals defeat Concordia Irvine 2-0 PacWest Conference victory on Saturday evening at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Sharks (4-6, 2-3) snapped a two match losing streak, while the Eagles (4-8, 2-3) lost their third straight match.

The Sharks broke open a scoreless game after halftime in the 55th minute. Junior Christian Porras of Rockville, Md./Rockville popped a pass to senior Tom Karshuening of Satrup, Germany/Gymnasium Walsrode who then centered it for freshman Reece Montgomery of Dromore, Northern Ireland/Dromore. Montgomery one-timed it into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

HPU added an insurance goal some 14 minutes later in the 69th minute as Montgomery made a midfield juke and passed to junior Luiz Garcia of Campo Grande, Brazil / Colegio Salesiano Dom Bosco. Garcia advanced the ball to a wide open freshman Makana Srivongsana of Honolulu/Kaiser at the right post. Srivongsana put it in the back of the net to give the Sharks all the scoring the would need and up the score to 2-0.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Max Austli of Gothenburg, Sweden and the defense did the rest, as CUI attempted nine shots – only one on goal – with Austli getting a save on that one. HPU shot seven times to Eagle goalkeeper Mac Hutchins, with six on goal resulting in the two scores and four saves.

The shutout was the second this season for the HPU defense, with Austli picking up his first clean sheet in just his second game between the pipes.

The Sharks close a three-game homestand next Thursday when they welcome Point Loma to the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The evening game is the first of a men's-women's doubleheader and kicks off at 5 p.m.
