HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University got back on the winning track Friday night as the Sharks beat Concordia Irvine 3-1 in PacWest Conference play in James Castle Gym at St. Andrew's Priory.
The Sharks (6-12, 5-7) defeated the Eagles (7-14, 6-7) for the second time this season, taking an 18-25, 25-22, 25-19, 26-24 victory.
The Sharks recorded a .338 attack percentage with 6.0 team blocks, while the Eagles hit .198 with 4.0 team blocks.
HPU junior
Perla Escobar of Calexico, Calif./Calexico collected the Sharks first 20-kill match of the season with 20 kills, a .425 hitting percentage and two service aces. Sophomore Camryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge chalked up her sixth double-double of the season with 18 kills and 13 digs. Senior
Carson Pyle of Houston, Texas/Memorial paced the team with five blocks to go with seven kills.
CUI was led by Riley Gill with 16 kills, a .297 hitting percentage and two blocks. Jaclyn Brown double-doubled with 12 kills and 14 digs.
The Sharks jumped out to an early lead to start the match using a 4-0 run and expanding the lead to 9-4 on a kill from Collie. But the HPU advantage would be short lived. The Eagles used a double block from Gill and Hannah Tostado to key a 9-2 run and grab a 13-11 lead. CUI never trailed again in the set. The Sharks got as close as 16-15 before the Eagles went on a 7-1 run before beating HPU 25-18 on a kill from Patience O'Neal.
The Sharks battled back in the second set. Both teams had 4-0 runs during the set that 13 ties and four lead changes. The Sharks and Eagles were tied at 22-all when senior
Mahea Pescaia of Kailua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama snapped the tie with a kill, followed by a Collie kill and a block from senior
Chandler Lippincott of Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista to take the second set 25-22.
HPU came away with the third in another hard fought set. After eight ties and six early lead changes, the Sharks took control of the set with a 4-1 run for a 16-13 lead. The Sharks held off the Eagles the rest of the way and got a kill from Escobar for a 25-19 victory.
The Sharks jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the fourth set, but the Eagles wouldn't stay down, going on mini-runs to tie HPU at 12-12. The teams would tie five more times before CUI used a 4-1 run to claim a 23-20 lead. The Sharks a kill from Escobar to start a 3-0 run that ended with a Pescaia ace. A kill from CUI's Gill gave the Eagles a set point at 24-23, only to have the Sharks get an Escobar kill to tie the set at 24-all. With Escobar serving for HPU, the Sharks saw the Eagles commit back-to-back hitting errors to with the set and match 26-24.
HPU closes a three-match homestand on Sunday when it hosts Chaminade in the second meeting between the crosstown rivals in the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge. It's HPU's Dig Pink breast cancer awareness night at Castle Gym. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
