HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University saw cross-town rival Chaminade roar back from a large deficit in the third set to sweep the Sharks 3-0 in PacWest Conference action in James Castle Gym at St. Andrew's Priory on Sunday night.
The Sharks (6-13, 5-8) played close but the Silverswords (15-4, 9-4) win 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 to spoil HPU's Dig Pink breast cancer awareness night.
The Sharks hit .190 for the match with 6.0 team blocks, while the Swords hit .192 with 4.0 team blocks in the tight match.
Sophomore Camryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge paced the Sharks with 10 kills and two service aces, while sophomore
Sierra Piester of Carlsbad, Calif./Tri-City Christian collected six kills and hit .417 for the match. Senior
Carson Pyle of Houston, Texas/Memorial paced the team with three blocks.
The Silverswords got 14 kills from Alana Handy, while Brooke Bell recorded 11 kills and a .647 attack percentage to go with three blocks.
HPU and Chaminade battled through the first set as the teams had 10 ties, with the last at 20-20 on a service ace by HPU freshman
Cara McClean of Beaverton, Ore./Southridge. The Swords took advantage of a service error and an ace from Nina Torio to back up by two and held on for a 25-23 win.
The Swords took control of the second set early and used a 5-0 run midway through the set to build a seven-point lead. The Sharks closed the gap to four at 19-15 after a block from sophomore
Abigail Wilmington of Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River, but CUH held on to finish with the 25-21 win.
The Sharks kept the third set close before using an 8-0 run to build a 19-13 lead as senior
Mahea Pescaia of Kailua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama capped the run with a service ace. HPU extended to a 10-1 run and a 21-14 lead after a Collie service ace. The Sharks and Swords traded points to put HPU up 23-17 when Chaminade got a final run. An HPU set error started an 8-0 run for the Swords and put the match away on a kill by Handy to win 25-23.
The loss ends a three-game homestand for HPU. The Sharks have a five-match northern California road trip up next, starting next Saturday at Dominican. First serve at the Conlan Center is set for 4 p.m. HST (7 p.m. PDT) in San Rafael, Calif.
