WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University junior
Ebony Madrid's goal in the 102nd minute gave HPU a 1-0 double overtime PacWest Conference win over Concordia Irvine on Saturday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Sharks (4-4-4, 2-1-2) picked up their third shutout of the season and second win in their seventh overtime game. The Eagles (4-6-1, 2-3) lost for the first time in their fifth extra time game of the season.
Madrid from Porterville, Calif./Ramstein (Germany) ended the contest with a picturesque header to the top left corner of the goal off a driving pass from sophomore
Nina Gonzales of Palmdale, Calif./Knight. Gonalzes was set up by sophomore Alissa Walin of Paia Hawai'i/Seabury Hall who received a ball midfield shot following a free kick after CUI yellow card foul and dished the ball over to the left side for Gonzales to drive in for Madrid's finish.
Keeping the Sharks alive throughout the game was senior goalkeeper
Lauren Spencer of Oxford, Mich./Oxford who was incredible between the pipes. Spencer recorded eight saves off the 21 CUI shots for her third shutout of the season and lucky number ten of her career.
The Eagles faced 12 HPU shots with goalkeeper Kaelyn Whitcomb recording three saves with the one goal allowed.
The Sharks are back in action at the Waipio Stadium on Thursday, October 18th to battle it out against Point Loma Nazarene. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. following the HPU men's game against PLNU.
