SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University's
Cameryn Collie collected a double-double with a season high 21 kills in leading HPU to a 3-1 victory over Dominican (Calif.) on Saturday afternoon at the Conlan Center.
The Sharks (7-13, 6-8) opened a five-match northern California road trip by downing the Penguins (6-13, 4-10) 25-14, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22.
The Sharks hit .193 for the match with 7.0 team blocks, as the Penguins hit just .109 but had 10.0 team blocks.
Collie, a sophomore from El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge led HPU with her seventh double-double of the season, with 11 digs to go with her team-leading 21 kills, to go with her .333 hitting percentage and two service aces. Junior
Perla Escobar of Calexico, Calif./Calexico recorded her seventh double-double with 17 kills and a season-high 23 digs. Freshman
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah led the Sharks with four blocks.
Dominican was led by Brittania Chan with 12 kills and a .393 attack percentage. Kate Even chalked up 11 kills and five blocks for the Penguins.
The teams were even throughout the match.
In the opening set, HPU held an early advantage then took control. Leading 10-7, an Escobar kill started a 7-0 run by the Sharks for a 10-point lead. The Sharks closed the set on a 5-1 run and won it on consecutive service aces by Collie for the 25-14 final.
The second saw 15 ties and six lead changes, but the homestanding Penguins grabbed a lead after 17-all. HPU fell behind 23-18, before getting a 4-0 run to pull within one at 23-22, but DUC responded with a kill by Even and a block from Rebecca Smith and Cat Thomason to win the second 25-22.
The third set played similarly to the second with the team knotting at 17-17. This time is was the Sharks with a 4-0 run. The Sharks built their lead to 24-20, then had to withstand a challenge from the Penguins before a Collie kill gave HPU the set 25-22 and a 2-1 lead.
The Sharks grabbed an early lead in the fourth set, carrying it out to a 21-16 lead after a Collie kill. But Dominican refused to give in and ripped off a 6-1 run to tie the set at 22-all. That's when Escobar came through with a kill to take the lead, then HPU followed it with a block from Ferris. An attack error by the Penguins ended the match as HPU finished with a 3-0 run and a 25-22 win.
HPU doesn't have much time to celebrate as the Sharks are back in action in less than 24 hours when they visit Holy Names. The match at Tobin Gym in Oakland, Calif., is set for noon HST (3 p.m. PDT).
