Ebony Madrid's first half goal was all Hawai'i Pacific University needed to take a 1-0 PacWest Conference victory over Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday afternoon at Kamehameha School's Paiea Stadium.
The Sharks (5-5-4, 3-2-2) avenged an earlier non-conference to the Vulcans (7-3-2, 4-2-1) and got the point for the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge.
The Sharks got the goal that decided the game in the 36th minute off of a corner kick. Senior
Josefine von der Burg of Gothenburg, Sweden sent the corner kick in front of the goal where Madrid, a junior from Porterville, Calif./Ramstein (Germany) headed the ball into the net.
Senior goalkeeper
Lauren Spencer of Oxford, Mich./Oxford, had a perfect sheet as she recorded her 12th career shutout and fourth of the season. Spencer recorded seven saves against 11 UHH shots.
Vulcan goalkeeper Bailey Cahill tallied three saves with the goal allowed versus the seven HPU shots.
The Sharks are back in action on Thursday when they face Holy Names. The contest at Cal State East Bay's Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, Calif., is set for 4 p.m. HST (7 p.m. PDT).
