HAYWARD, Calif. – Freshman
Brittny Ihara's 88th minute goal helped Hawai'i Pacific University post a 1-1 tie with Holy Names in PacWest Conference action on Thursday night at Pioneer Field.
The Sharks (5-5-5, 3-2-3) battled through their eighth overtime contest this season, while the Hawks (3-10-1, 1-6-1) recorded their first tie of the year.
Despite shooting a season-high 25 times, HPU had to come from behind in the match.
Holy Names broke the scoreless tie in the 65th minute when Abbi Alexander took a pass on the right side of the box from Jocelyn Reyes and fired it in the net for her third goal of the year and a 1-0 HNU lead.
The game looked like it could go the Hawks way until the Sharks pushed forward in the closing minutes of regulation.
Following a Holy Names corner kick in the 88th minute, the Sharks got a counter rush that had junior
Ebony Madrid of Porterville, Calif./Ramstein (Germany) go one-v-one with HNU goalkeeper Alyssa Lopez. Lopez stopped Madrid's shot, but the ball rebounded to Ihara, the freshman from Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City, who sent it in the net to tie the contest at 1-1.
HPU senior goalkeeper
Lauren Spencer of Oxford, Mich./Oxford tallied four saves against the 10 shots by Holy Names. HNU's Lopez posted 12 saves on the Sharks 25 shots.
HPU allowed Holy Names just one shot in the two overtime periods.
The Sharks are back on the pitch on Saturday when they face Academy of Art. The contest at the Community College of San Francisco's Soccer Field is set for 11:30 a.m. HST (2:30 p.m. PDT) following the men's game between the schools.
