OAKLAND, Calif. – Behind another double-double from
Cameryn Collie, Hawai'i Pacific University defeated Holy Names 3-1 in PacWest Conference play on Sunday afternoon at Tobin Gym.
The Sharks (8-13, 7-8) made it two straight to start their northern California road trip with the 23-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-17 win. The Hawks (3-18, 2-13) lost their ninth straight and were beaten by HPU in both meetings this season.
HPU posted an attack percentage of .224 for the match with 7.0 team blocks, while the Hawks hit .184 with 9.0 team blocks.
Collie, a sophomore from El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge led HPU with her eighth double-double of the season, chalking up a match-high 15 kills to go with 13 digs, a block and a service ace. Senior
Carson Pyle of Houston, Texas/Memorial added 10 kills with a .444 hitting percentage and led the match with five blocks. Freshman
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah chipped in nine kills with four blocks.
HNU was paced by Maddy Standley with 13 kills, four blocks and a .545 hitting percentage. Fanny Chow double-doubled with 10 kills and 24 digs.
The Hawks and Sharks played a tight match that featured 30 ties and 13 lead changes in the four sets.
Holy Names opened up a 20-14 lead on the Sharks before a kill by sophomore
Sierra Piester of Carlsbad, Calif./Tri-City Christian got a kill to start a run to pull HPU within two at 23-21. The teams traded points with HNU grabbing the 25-23 win on a Standley kill.
The second set saw the teams swap the lead early before HPU rallied with a 9-2 run to go up 15-8 on a double block from Pyle and Ferris. The Sharks extended the lead to 18-11 when Holy Names made a comeback with an 8-2 run of their own to pull within a point at 22-21. Pyle stepped up with a kill to start a 3-0 Sharks run that ended with the Collie ace for a 25-21 win.
The third set saw mini runs from both teams as HPU built a three-point lead at 19-16, only to have the Hawks come back to tie the set at 20-all. The teams swapped points to 25-25 when a Hawk set error gave HPU the 26-25 lead. The Sharks got the set point on a double-block from Pyle and Collie to win the extended set 27-25.
The fourth set was even with five ties and a lead change to 10-10. That's when a kill from Pyle started an HPU 4-1 run and the Sharks never trailed again. The Hawks clawed back to within a point at 14-13 on a Shark attack error, but a Ferris kill started an 11-4 run for HPU. The final 6-1 Shark run was capped by a Ferris kill for the 25-17 win and the match.
Still in the Bay area, the Sharks are back on the hardwood on Tuesday against Notre Dame de Namur. First serve at Gleason Gym in Belmont, Calif., is set for 4 p.m. HST (7 p.m. PDT).
