HAYWARD, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University's own goal in the 102nd minute gave Holy Names a golden goal 1-0 double-overtime PacWest Conference victory on Thursday evening at Pioneer Stadium.
The Sharks (5-8, 3-5) opened a three-game northern California road trip with the loss to the Hawks (4-10-1, 3-5). It was HPU's first overtime game of the season. Holy Names snapped a four-game losing streak with the win.
HPU and HNU were knotted in a scoreless tie when a crash between players caused a free kick for the Hawks in the second overtime in the 102nd minute. HNU's Prince Bere set up on the left side of the field about 25 yards out and rifled the ball toward the center of the box. But HPU senior
Tom Karshuening of Satrop, Germany tried to clear the ball with a header. But instead of heading out, the directed header went straight into the net for the crushing defeat.
The Sharks had 17 shots against the Hawks, who managed to shoot just seven times.
HPU had a perfect first half from starting goalkeeper
Max Austli, a redshirt freshman from of Gothenburg, Sweden, who collected a save on four HNU shots. Junior
Chandler Schur of Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg Career Magnet, subbed in a halftime, got the hard luck loss after chalking up a save against three shots.
Holy Names keeper Alessandro Ramondino had five saves against the 17 HPU shots for the perfect sheet.
HPU continues the trip on Saturday by visiting Academy of Art. Kickoff is set for 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT) at the Community College of San Francisco Soccer Field.
