FRESNO, Calif. – The Hawai'i Pacific University men fell in their final road contest of the season as Fresno Pacific outgunned the Sharks 6-3 on Tuesday evening at Ramierez Field.
The Sharks (6-9, 4-6) allowed five first half goals the Sunbirds (13-2-1, 8-2) ran its winning streak to four straight.
HPU got a pair of goals from junior
Luiz Garcia of Campo Grande, Brazil/Colegio Salesiano Dom Bosco. His first goal in the 14th minute with a header to tie the match after a pass from junior
Zen Roten from Palos Verdes, Calif. /Palos Verdes.
His second came in the 71st minute off a pass from freshman
Reece Montgomery of Dromore, Northern Ireland/Dromore that led Garcia into the box and he beat the keeper for the score.
HPU's third goal was in the 89th minute as junior
Kyle Rivers of Spanaway, Wash./Spanaway Lake recovered a loose ball in the box and put it on the upper shelf to finalize the score at 6-3.
FPU scored the first goal in just the sixth minute, as Anthony Velarde chipped it off a pass from Eric Sanchez to take a 1-0 lead.
The Sharks rebounded eight minutes later with Garcia's first score in the 14th minute.
But that's when FPU went wild, taking the 2-1 lead on a Sergio Bermudez goal in the 20th minute that started a string of four more goals in the half.
FPU's Joao Ravasio scored in the 26th and 39th minutes, and Isaiah Asencio added one in the 42nd minute to put the Sunbirds on top 5-1 at intermission.
FPU added a sixth goal just three minutes into the second half as Caesar Angulo headed in a free kick for the 6-1 advantage.
HPU would score the final two goals in the game.
Junior goalkeeper
Chandler Schur of Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg Career Magnet School allowed five goals without a save in the first half against nine FPU shots. Redshirt freshman keeper
Max Austli of Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet came in for the second half with two saves and allowed a goal facing seven Sunbird shots.
FPU's Patrick Timmer posted four saves with two goals allowed in 75 minutes in getting the win. Logan Dinsdale allowed a goal with no saves in the final 15 minutes. The duo faced 14 HPU shots.
The Sharks close the season at home on Saturday as they host cross-town rival Chaminade in a PacWest Hawai'i Challenge contest. The Senior Day game will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. at the Waipio Soccer Stadium.
