HPU Bests Notre Dame de Namur 2-1

BELMONT, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University got a penalty kick goal in the 76th minute and held on to beat Notre Dame de Namur 2-1 in men's PacWest Conference play on Friday afternoon at Koret Field.

The Sharks (3-4, 1-1) returned with a win to PacWest action, while the Argonauts (2-7, 1-2) pick up the loss after snapping a six-game losing streak last Saturday.

After allowing a goal 40-seconds earlier to NDNU, the Sharks were fouled in the 18-yard box the next time down the field. HPU junior Luiz Garcia of Campo Grande, Brazil stepped up for the penalty kick and sent it past Argo goalkeeper Israel Mendoza for the game-winner.

The contest was a continuous one, with a total of seven caution cards, including one to each head coach, in the contest.

HPU drew the first score in the match in the 36th minute as senior Christian Porras of Rockville, Md./Rockville and freshman Makana Srivongsana of Honolulu/Kaiser teamed to deliver the ball to junior Jair Espinoza of San Miguel Petapa, Guatemala who knocked it into an empty net for his third goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.

The score remained the same as the squads battled it out until the 76th minute. After a shot and HPU save, the Argos got a corner kick. Ruben Sanabia sent the ball to Josh Santillian who collected his fourth goal of the year with a shot to the far post to tie the game at 1-1.

The Sharks used the ensuing kickoff to come right back and drew the penalty kick just 40 seconds later.

HPU junior goalkeeper Chandler Schur of Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg Career Magnet recorded six saves and got a team save following a corner kick in the first half against 13 Argonaut shots.

Starting NDNU goalkeeper Javier Santana allowed a goal off the three shots he faced in the first half, while Mendoza recorded four second half saves on eight HPU shots after entering at halftime.

The Sharks are back in PacWest Conference action on Sunday at Dominican (Calif.). Kickoff is at 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT) at Kennelly Field in San Rafael as HPU closes its first California road trip.
