Dominican Hat Tricks Sharks 3-0

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. –  Hawai'i Pacific University saw Dominican forward Wilson Briggs post a hat trick in the first half in leading DUC to a 3-0 PacWest Conference victory on Sunday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

The Sharks (3-5, 1-2) closed their California road trip with the loss, while the Penguins (5-4-2, 2-1-1) picked up their second straight win.

The Penguins got started fast, scoring their first goal in the fourth minute when Briggs got loose on a breakaway off a pass from Matt Albert and beat HPU junior goalkeeper Chandler Schur of Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg Career Magnet on a 1-on-1 to take a 1-0 lead.

DUC took advantage of a midfield turnover by HPU to score its second goal. Eddie Silverbush again found Briggs open on a breakaway in the 28th minute. Briggs once again won the 1-on-1 for his second score of the contest and a 2-0 advantage.

Then just three minutes later, Briggs collected the hat trick for Dominican. Working in the offense, Dylan Finley sent the ball to Greg Natt who crossed it in the box to an open Briggs for the goal, his third of the game and 11th of the season.

That would be all the scoring for the Penguins on the day, taking the 3-0 lead into the half.

At the start of the second half, DUC's Kieran Vrklan was issued a red card, giving HPU a man advantage. The Sharks pelted Dominican goalkeeper William Finnie with 17 shots in the game, but Finnie posted eight saves.

Schur faced seven Penguin shots, two in the second half, as he recorded two saves with the three goals allowed.

HPU returns to Oahu for a three-game homestand that starts on Thursday afternoon. PacWest newcomer Biola visits the Waipio Peninsula Soccer  Complex to face the Sharks in a contest that kicks off at 12:30 p.m.
