BELMONT, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University scored once in each half on its way to a 2-0 PacWest Conference victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Friday afternoon at Koret Field.
The Sharks (3-3-3, 1-0-1) held an opponent scoreless for the second time in three games. The Argonauts (1-8, 0-3) lost their fourth straight and were shutout for the fifth time this season.
HPU scored its first goal in the fourth minute when sophomore
Nina Gonzales of Palmdale, Calif./Knight put the Sharks on the board with her second goal of the season. Freshman
Cheyenne Smith of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell crossed the ball from the right side to Gonzales who tapped it into the open net. It was the second straight contest that Gonzales found the back of the net.
The teams remained at 1-0 almost to the end before the Sharks got a guarantee score in the 86th minute. Junior
Ebony Madrid of Porterville, Calif./Ramstein (Germany) send a low crossing pass from the left side to junior
Emily Lemus of Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda who one-timed it into the top left corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Senior goalkeeper
Lauren Spencer of Oxford, Mich./Oxford was flawless between the pipes. Spencer recorded five saves off the 12 NDNU shots for her second shutout of the season and ninth of her career.
The Argos faced 13 HPU shots with goalkeeper Alexis Aguilar recording four saves with the two goals allowed to go with a team save.
The Sharks conclude their four-game California road trip on Sunday afternoon when they visit Domincian (Calif.) for a PacWest contest. Kickoff at Kennelly Field in San Rafael is at 11:30 a.m. HST (2:30 p.m. PDT) following the men's game between HPU and DUC.
