HONOLULU, Hawai'i – A golden goal from freshman
Cheyenne Smith two-and-a half minutes into overtime gave Hawai'i Pacific University its first victory of the season as the Sharks downed Chaminade 3-2 in non-conference play at St. Louis Field.
The Sharks (1-2-1) scored in the 89th minute to tie the game and hand the Silverswords (1-1) their first loss of the season.
Smith, a freshman midfielder from Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell recovered a corner kick that caromed off the Swords defense in the 93rd minute and punched it in to give the Sharks the victory.
The goal capped a comeback for HPU.
Chaminade scored a quick goal in the seventh minute as Sword Randi Fontes took advantage of a break away and fired a shot into the left corner for the 1-0 lead.
The score stayed that way until 20 minutes were left in regulation.
The Sharks evened the score in the 70th minute when freshman
Tehani Furuta of Mililiani, Hawai'i/Mililani took a feed from junior
Ebony Madrid and chipped it into the upper right corner to make it 1-1.
But the game wasn't tied for long. Just 16 seconds later, Fontes got her second goal of the game on a breakaway shot from the right. Fontes got HPU freshman goalkeeper
Marissa Froio of Semi Valley, Calif./Royal to come off her line, then put it over her into the left corner to take the 2-1 lead.
The Sharks again played forward and caught a break with just under two minutes to play when a foul in the box and yellow card on Chaminade's Bianca Gonzales gave HPU a penalty kick. Furuta buried the kick for her fourth goal of the year and second of the game to tie the score.
Chaminade nearly pulled off the win in the last minute with two quick shots by Caitlin Tatemichi, but Froio saved one and the second with one second left in regulation was wide.
HPU grabbed its only lead with the game-winner off the corner kick from Furuta.
The Sharks return to action on Thursday when Hawai'i Hilo comes to the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park for a non-conference game. The women kickoff at 3 p.m., following the UHH-HPU men's contest.
