Biola Sweeps Sharks 3-0

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University ended a week-long Southern California road trip on a down note as Biola swept the PacWest Conference match 3-0 on Saturday night at Chase Gym.
 
The Eagles (9-5, 5-2) defeated the Sharks (3-10, 2-5) 25-16, 25-12, 25-20.
 
Biola totally dominated play, hitting .287 with 7.0 team blocks to the Sharks .085 attack with 4.0 team blocks.
 
The Eagles were tied only four times in the three sets, with a total of two lead changes.
 
The Sharks were led by senior Carson Pyle of Houston, Texas/Memorial who led the team with six kills, three blocks, two service aces and posted a .308 hitting percentage. Freshman Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah also chalked up six kills, while sophomore Sierra Piester of Carlsbad, Calif./Tri-City Christian had four kills and a .333 attack percentage.
 
Biola was led by Karly Dantuma with 15 kills, four blocks and a .480 attack percentage, while Christina DenBoer recorded 10 kills with eight digs. Bekah Roth also collected four blocks.
 
The Eagles never trailed in the first set as they opened the night on a 6-1 run and went on to take the opener 25-16.
 
The second set opened with HPU up 4-1, but the Eagles chipped back to pull within 7-5 before springing a 9-1 run on HPU and taking over the set. BU closed the set on a 10-3 run for the 25-12 win.
 
The third set saw HPU jump out to a 7-2 run led by Pyle and Ferris. The Sharks built their lead to 11-5 on an ace by Pyle, but that's when the Eagles responded. BU rallied with a 12-1 run to flip the set and eventually the match to lead 17-12. The teams swapped points and the Sharks used a 5-1 run to pull back within four, but DenBoer got the kill to win the set and match 25-20.
                                                                                                                                     
HPU comes home to play again on Friday night when Holy Names visits Honolulu. First serve for the Sharks against the Hawks is set for 7 p.m. at James Castle Gym at St. Andrew's Priory.
