WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University and Fresno Pacific battled through 90 minutes and two overtimes before settling for a scoreless draw in PacWest Conference play on Wednesday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Sharks (4-3-2, 2-1-1) and Sunbirds (3-7-1, 1-2-1) had opportunities throughout the contest, but could not convert.
HPU junior goalkeeper
Jeremy Zielinski of Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead, tallied his second shutout of the season as he collected five saves against 13 FPU shots in the 110 minutes of play.
Sunbirds keeper Patrick Timmer picked up two saves against the 10 HPU shots levied against Fresno Pacific.
While the stats show HPU had just two shots on goal, four of the other eight shots open misses or balls that hit off the cross bar or side post of the goal. The Sunbirds had their share of errant shots as well.
How hard the match was showed in the seven yellow cards issued for the rugged, physical play.
HPU has a couple of days to recover before hitting the pitch again on Monday against Dominican (Calif.). The PacWest match follows the HPU women's contest with DUC and is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
