SAN FRANCISCO – Hawai'i Pacific University brought out the broom again on Wednesday, sweeping to its fourth straight victory by beating Academy of Art 3-0 in PacWest Conference action at Kezar Pavilion.
The Sharks (8-5, 4-1) swept up the Urban Knights (4-9, 2-4) 27-25, 25-22, 25-15.
HPU hit .198 for the match with seven blocks, and recorded eight service aces. ART U hit .159 with four blocks and seven aces.
Junior
Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge, posted her third straight double-double and seventh of the season with a match-high 13 kills and 10 digs to go with two blocks. Sophomore
Lauren Christie of Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon added 10 kills with an ace. Sophomore
Kirah Boynton-Brown of Vancouver, Wash./Union recorded four blocks to lead the Sharks.
ART U got nine kills each from Mariana Figueroa and Sadie Emery who also added three blocks. Kylie Lenberg led the Urban Knights with four blocks.
The tone of the match was set in the first set as the teams battled through 15 ties and seven lead changes, with no team holding more than a three-point lead in the set. HPU overcame a 21-19 deficit with a kill by Christie that started a 4-0 run that put the Sharks up 23-21 after a pair of kills from sophomore
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah and a combo block from Ferris and Boynton-Brown.
But the Urban Knights rallied following a Sharks service error and their own service ace to tie the set at 24. The teams swapped points to tie at 25 before HPU answered again with a kill from Collie and a kill from Christie to take the set 27-25.
Set two saw six ties, but only one lead change. The Sharks rallied from a three-point 16-13 deficit and tied the set for a final time at 17-all on a 4-1 run, then used a service ace from sophomore
Cara McClean of Beaverton, Ore./Southridge to go up by two at 19-17. The Sharks completed what was a 10-3 run to hold a 23-19 lead. HPU held off another challenge by ART U and got the final Christie kill to win 25-22.
The final set had HPU up early before the lone tie at 2-2 and followed by a 4-1 run for the momentum that never swung back to the home team. The Sharks all-but secured the match with a 7-0 run for a 24-14 lead, then used another Christie kill to seal the deal with the 25-15 win.
HPU has won three matches so far on the Northern California swing and takes on Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday night. First serve in the Bay Area suburb of Belmont is set for 4 p.m. HST (7 p.m. PDT) at Gleason Gym.
