Second Half Comeback Dooms Sharks

IRVINE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University 2-0 halftime lead evaporated in the second half as Concordia Irvine scored three times, including Jadenn Carillo's game-winning goal in the final minute, for a 3-2 PacWest Conference victory Thursday at Eagles Field.

The Sharks (7-6-1, 4-4-0) dropped their third straight contest, while Eagles (6-3-2, 4-0-1) reversed the Sharks domination of the opening half with the three-goal performance in the second.

Freshman Callie Rheaume of Camas, Wash./Camas was the Sharks star of the game with two goals in under three minutes of play in the opening half. The first was on a penalty kick that was easy money for the powerhouse kicker in the 33rd minute, and the second came in the 35th minute off a gorgeous pass from junior Nina Gonzales of Palmdale, Calif./Knight.

In the second half, the Eagles stepped it up a notch scoring in the 51st minute on a corner kick from Analisa Gjonovich that Molly Melanson headed the ball past the HPU keeper.

The tying goal came in the 85th minute on a recovered scrum ball in front of the net as Marianna Maldonado put the ball to the far right side through multiple HPU defenders.

With less than a minute to play, the Sharks couldn't hold off the CUI offensive and Carrillo's shot from the far left side of the field made its way to the top right corner of the goal to seal the deal for the Eagles.

HPU keeper Gretchen Berkey (1-2-1) of Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass faced 17 shots with four saves in taking the tough loss.

CUI keeper Kaelyn Whitcomb faced 12 shots with 6 saves in taking the win bringing her to 6-3-2 on the season.

The Sharks finish off their southern California road-trip on Saturday against Point Loma. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. HST (11:30 a.m. PDT).
