WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Notre Dame de Namur stopped every attempt that Hawai'i Pacific University fired at them in stunning HPU 2-0 to open PacWest Conference play at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Friday evening.
The Sharks (3-3-1, 0-1) had several chances but the Argonauts (4-2-2, 1-0) met every challenge in taking the conference match.
HPU attempted 20 shots in game, 12 on goal, but Argo goalkeeper Alexis Aguilar chalked up 12 saves for the shutout.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Marissa Froio of Simi Valley, Calif./Royal faced 16 NDNU shots, saving five and allowing the two goals.
The Argonauts got a pair of goals by Susan Whitney, one in each half that spelled doom for the Sharks.
The first goal came in the 23rd minute when Whitney collected an errant clearing pass and took it in for a one-timer against Froio for the score.
The second goal all but closed the door on HPU in the 80th minute. Ellie Mujushi crossed the box with a pass to Whitney who put the ball in the strings.
HPU was unlucky all evening, with Aguilar making spectacular saves, or wide-open shots skimming just wide past the post.
HPU doesn't have long to recover from the loss. The Sharks continue PacWest Conference play on Sunday afternoon against in-state rival Hawai'i Hilo. Kickoff is set for Noon on Waipio Complex Field 5. The match was moved from the stadium field to maintenance issues.
