Lukas Motschmann won the men's individual title and junior
Robyn Kaltenbrunn took the women's at the 2019 HPU Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at the Kahuku Golf Course.
Motschman, from Magdeburg, Germany, covered the men's 8-kilometer course in 25:54.8 in leading the Sharks to the men's team title. HPU scored 17 points in the meet with Chaminade who scored 38 points.
Kaltenbrunn, of Johannesburg, South Africa, never trailed in leading the women's 5-kilometer in 19:28.2, as the Sharks placed scored 39 points to finish second behind Hawai'i with 26. Hawai'i Hilo was third with 83 points and Chaminade fourth with 99.
On the men's side, HPU took the top four positions. Freshman
Jona Bodirsky of Muhlhausen, Germany, placed second, 55 seconds behind Motschmann with a 26:49.5. Sophomore
David Rutto of Eldoret, Kenya ran third with a time of 28:57.7 and HPU junior
Jason Flores of Beaumont, Calif./Beaumont fourth in 30:06.4. HPU wrapped up the scoring with junior
Cade Harrington of Galveston, Texas/Ball finishing eighth in a time of 33:55.7.
Chaminade's Peyton Oshiro was the top non-Shark finisher with a time of 31:05.9
Kaltenbrunn got out early in the women's race and held on, beating UH's Rebecca Dekay by nearly nine seconds. Dekay was second in 19:36.9, with teammate Sophia Lodigani third in 20:20.9. UH Hilo's Olivia Jarvis placed fourth in 20:29.2.
HPU sophomore Karen Corona Perez of Ocracoke, N.C., ran fifth with a time of 20:34.7. Freshman
Sophia Cash of Kamuela, Hawai'i/Honoka'a started a school of Sharks, finishing 10th in 20:54.6. Senior
Brooke Gottmeier of Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley ran 11th in 20:57.1, freshman
McKay Guckenberg of Eureka, Mont./Lincoln County, 12th in 21:01.3, and senior Jasmine Napenas of Wheatland, Calif./Wheatland Union, 13th in 21:18.4.
Senior
Janice Hata of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle was clocked in 22:10.2 for 20th, while sophomore
Evelyn Macias of Keller, Texas/Timber Creek was 24th with a 22:56.6
The Sharks run again next Saturday when they visit the Big Island for the UH Hilo Invitational. The first race starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Naniloa Golf Course in Hilo.
