HPU Takes Out Hawai'i Hilo 2-0

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University, with a little help from the Hawaii Hilo, took home its second PacWest Conference victory this season with a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex Field 5.

The Sharks (4-2-1, 2-0) got a gift from the Vulcans (1-5, 0-1) in the 40th minute with a Hilo defender tapping the ball into his own goal off his shoulder for a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

HPU's free goal came off a corner kick that was originally called a Vulcan goal kick and reversed. Senior Jair Espinoza of San Miguel Petapa, Guatemala/CSD Municipal lobbed the corner to the far side post where a Vulcan player accidentally tapped it past his own keeper for the early 1-0 lead.

The Sharks sealed the deal in the 56th minute on another corner kick opportunity. Junior Garret Arzberger of Munich, Germany/Therese von Bayern recovered the scrum ball in front of the goal and fired a shot that was blocked right back to the feet of senior midfielder Paul Enzigmueller of Zimdorf, Germany/Dietrich-Bonhoeffer Gymnasium who blasted the ball through the mess of players into the bottom right corner finalizing the game at 2-0.

Junior goalkeeper Jeremy Zielinski of Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead recorded his fourth win and second shutout of the season with five saves on 17 UH Hilo shots.

Vulcan goalkeeper Michael Harre took the loss and recorded five saves with the two goals allowed on 14 HPU shots.

The Sharks are back in action on next Saturday to face-off against cross-town rivals Chaminade. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., following the women's contest between the schools at Saint Louis Field.
