SAN DIEGO – Hawai'i Pacific University never led as No. 17 Point Loma had its way in a 106-47 PacWest Conference triumph on Thursday night at Golden Gym.
The Sharks (7-18, 4-16) tied the game once at 2-all, but the 17th ranked Sea Lions (22-4, 18-2) went on a 10-0 run and never looked back.
HPU was led by junior
Ronald Blain of McDonough, Ga./Union Grove who scored 11 points with four rebounds. Junior
Daniel Melifonwu of San Diego/Lincoln led the Sharks with seven rebounds to go with seven points. Sophomore
David Rowlands of Dayton, Ohio/Moorpark and junior
Scott Ulaneo of Rome, Italy/St. George's International each collected eight points, with Ulaneo adding five rebounds.
Point Loma's Daulton Hommes led all scorers with 28 points to go with three blocked shots, while Preston Beverly added 16 points with eight rebounds. Sterling Somers came off the bench with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, with Brock Mackenzie adding 12 points and Ben Okhotin 11.
HPU shot 30 percent from the floor (18-of-60), including 6-of-28 (21 percent) from the 3-point arc. The Sharks made 5-of-11 (46 percent) from the foul line. PLNU hit 61 percent from the field (38-of-62), with an amazing 19-of-32 (59 percent) from the arc. The Sea Lions made 11-of-18 (61 percent) from the free throw stripe. PLNU outrebounded HPU 43-32 and had eight turnovers to the Sharks 13.
Point Loma opened the game with a layup off the center jump, and HPU senior
Darnell Bettis of Los Angeles/University, tied the contest with a layup 14 second later. That's when Ziggy Satterthwaite's layup started a 10-0 run for the Sea Lions.
The Sharks trimmed the lead back to seven with a layup from senior
Jonathan Janssen of Noosa Heads, Australia/Mountain State and a 3-pointer from Rowlands. Hommes followed with a triple for PLNU that started an 18-5 run midway through the first half and the Sharks were down 20. The Sea Lions added two more big runs and with Beverly's layup just before the horn, PLNU led 64-21 at the half. Point Loma shot 74 percent from the floor in the opening half.
The second half was more of the same, though the Sea Lions shot only 45 percent for the second 20 minutes, and won by 59 in a 106-47 final.
The Sharks head back into the LA area on Saturday for their final road game of the season as they visit LaMirada to take on Biola at Chase Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. HST (7:30 p.m. PST) following the women's game between the schools.
