KAHUKU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University's
Lukas Motschmann ran away from the field to take the men's individual title and lead the Sharks to a second place finish at the University of Hawai'i's Big Wave Invitational Saturday morning at the Kahuku Golf Course. HPU placed fifth in the women's race.
Motschmann, a senior from Magdeburg, Germany, was clocked in 16 minutes, 10 seconds to win the five-kilometer men's race by 17 seconds over HPU newcomer
Jona Bodirsky of Muhlhausen, Germany who clocked a 16:27.
Division III powerhouse George Fox turned in the next eight places led by Timothy Kaelin with a 16:30.
HPU sophomore
David Rutto of Eldoret, Kenya, finished 11th overall and was the third Shark across the finish in 17:44. Junior
Jason Flores of Beaumont, Calif., placed 13th overall in 18:07, while freshman
Troy Oshimo of Honolulu/Kalani, was 18th in 19:51 to round out the scoring. Junior
Cade Harrington of Galveston, Texas/Ball finished 19th in 20:28 for the Sharks.
HPU scored 38 points to finish behind the 25 point performance of George Fox. Chaminade was third with 76 points.
On the women's side, the race was the BYU invitational as the Division I No. 6 Cougars took the top 13 places led by Whittni Orton with at time of 18:05 in the 5K. The Cougars took a perfect 15 points for the performance. HPU placed fifth with 126 points.
The Sharks were led by junior
Robyn Kaltenbrunn of Johannesburg, South Africa, who was the first non-Division I runner across the line in a time of 19:41 in 18th place. She was the third non-BYU runner as well with Hawai'i's Shannon McClish (14th) in 18:57 and Pacific's (Calif.) Jasmine Gonzalez (18th) at 19:29 ahead of her.

Brooke Gottmeier of Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley, was second across for HPU in a time of 21:07 for 27th, with fresman
McKay Guckenberg of Eureka, Mont./Lincoln County next in 42nd with a 21:59. Freshman Karen Corona Perez of Ocracoke, N.C./Ocracoke placed 43rd in 22:01 and freshman
Sophia Cash of Kamuela, Hawai'i/Honoka'a completing HPU scoring in 45th with a time of 22:05. Senior
Janice Hata of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle was 47th in 22:28, senior Jasmine Napenas of Wheatland, Calif./Wheatland Union was 53rd in 22:58 with sophomore
Evelyn Macias 62nd in 25:14.
After BYU's perfect 15 point finish, host Hawai'i ran second with 66 points, with George Fox third with 100. Pacific was fourth with 122, just four points ahead of HPU. Chaminade scored 142 points for sixth and Hawai'i-Hilo.
The Sharks are in action again next Saturday as they travel to the mainland for the Biola Invitational in Fullerton Calif. The event is a preview of the PacWest Championship course that will be held on Oct. 26.
