Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sharks Fall Late to No. 17 Dallas Baptist 2-1

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University and No. 17 Dallas Baptist played scoreless for the first 68 minutes, then the pair scored three goals in the final 22 minutes as No. 17 DBU got a goal in the 87th minute to beat HPU 2-1 at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Sharks (0-1) opened the season with the heartbreaking loss, while the No. 17 Patriots (2-0-1) got a scare from HPU.

While DBU controlled the possession for most of the contest, the Shark defense held firm until the final 11 minutes.

The Sharks got the better of the Patriots in the 69th minute when freshman midfielder Callie Rheaume of Camas, Wash./Camas cleared a ball in the DBU offensive zone that found senior forward Ebony Madrid of Porterville, Calif./Ramstein (Germany) wide open at midfield. Madrid dribbled it past a defender and then juked DBU keeper Hope Koym for an open net shot to put the Sharks up 1-0.

HPU then had to fight the forward pressure of the Patriots. A rebounded shot in the 79th minute went into a scrum in front of the goal. When the ball popped loose, it went straight to the foot of Audrey Alderink who chipped it into an opening on the left side to knot the score at 1-all.

The Patriots got the game-winner off a corner kick in the 87th minute of action. Kaci Parks crossed the corner kick into the six-yard box it ricocheted off HPU sophomore goal keeper Marissa Froio of Simi Valley, Calif./Royal straight to Delaney Schmidt who buried it in the net to take the 2-1 advantage.

DBU recorded 14 shots, six on goal, for the night as Froio posted four saves with the two goals allowed.

The Sharks had nine shots, four on goal, with Koym tallying three saves with the goal allowed.

The Sharks travel to the mainland this weekend before opening a three-game road swing in the Pacific Northwest at Central Washington on Monday. Kickoff at Tomlinson Stadium in Ellensburg, Wash., is set for 4 p.m. HST (7 p.m. PDT).
