HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University claimed both the men's and women's team titles, taking the 2019 Chaminade Invitational at Kapiolani Park on Saturday.
The Sharks men just missed a perfect score led by individual champion senior
Lukas Motschmann of Magdeburg, Germany, scoring 16 points to Chaminade's 39 points.
The HPU women took the team title with 36 points, beating the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine by five points who scored 41. Hawai'i Hilo scored 65 points with host Chaminade scoring 68.
Motschmann ran with freshman
Jona Bodirsky of Muhlhausen, Germany, through the 8-kilometer race and pulled away to win with a time of 27 minutes, 52 seconds. Bodirsky came through 11 seconds later for second at 28:03.
Senior
Christian Duran of Whittier, Calif./LaSerna finished third with a 29:34 and sophomore
David Rutto of Eldoret, Kenya was fourth in 30:42.
Chaminade's Peyton Oshiro broke up the perfect score finishing fifth in 30:50 before HPU junior
Jason Flores of Beaumont, Calif./Beaumont, finished sixth in 31:49 to round out the scoring. Junior
Cade Harrington of Galveston, Texas/Ball ran 10th in 35:56.
HPU junior
Robyn Kaltenbrunn of Magdeburg, Germany led the Sharks placing second in the women's 5-kilometer race in 20:29. Hawai'i's Shannon McClish won the women's individual race in 19:56. Chaminade's Alena Albertson was third in 21:00, with UH Hilo's Olivia Jarvis fourth in 21:38.
HPU put four runners across in the top 10 and seven runners through the top 14 in winning the team title. UH placed four runners in the top 11, but the Sharks fifth runner was two spots ahead of the Rainbow Wahine's to grab the win.
Senior
Brooke Gottmeier of Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley ran sixth in 22:01, just ahead of senior Jasmine Napenas of Wheatland, Calif./Wheatland Union in seventh in 22:06. Freshman
Sophia Cash of Kamuela, Hawai'i/Honoka'a placed ninth as HPU's fourth runner in 22:32.
The Sharks clinched the win with sophomore Karen Corona Perez of Ocracoke, N.C., placing 12th in 23:04, a second better than freshman teammate
McKay Guckenberg of Eureka, Mont./Lincoln County in 13th in 23:05 and senior
Janice Hata of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle 14th in 23:14. Sophomore
Evelyn Macias of Keller, Texas/Timber Creek was 18th in 24:01.
After four weekend of racing, the Sharks take next week off before hosting the HPU Sharks Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Kahuku Golf Course. First gun is slated for 7 a.m..
