WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University held No. 22 Simon Fraser at bay through most of the contest, but The Clan scored once in each half on the way to a 2-0 victory on Saturday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Sharks (0-2-1) hosted their home opener with the loss to The Clan (3-1).
SFU collected its first score in the 15th minute on a corner kick with Matteo Polisi sending the kick to the left post where brother Marcello Polisi headed it in for the 1-0 lead.
The Sharks kept the match that way until the 76th minute when William Raphael stole the ball from HPU and started an odd-man rush. Raphael crossed the ball to Matteo Polisi who finished off the score for the 2-0 advantage.
Sophomore goal keeper
Jeremy Zielinski of Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead got his first action of the season, recording four saves and allowing two goals against 11 SFU shots.
The Clan keeper Aiden Bain got the shutout with two saves while facing 10 Shark shots.
HPU plays again on Thursday against cross-town rival Chaminade in a non-conference contest. The match has been moved to 3 p.m. at Waipio Soccer Park Field 5 due to field maintenance at the stadium. The HPU women open the day at 12:30 p.m. against the Silverswords.
