Sharks Blast Saint Martin's 5-0

LACEY, Wash. – Hawai'i Pacific University put everything together on Saturday, closing their trip to the Pacific Northwest by blasting Saint Martin's 5-0 at Saints Field.

The Sharks (2-2) scored early and played great defense to take down the Saints (2-3-2).

HPU freshman Kayli Ann Yoshioka of Honolulu, Hawai'i/Kaiser and senior Emily Lemus of Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda each scored two goals, while senior Ebony Madrid of Porterville, Calif./Ramstein recorded two assists to lead the charge.

The Sharks defense allowed only four Saints shots for the game, with senior Gretchen Berkey of Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass, recording one save on the only shot on goal. It was Berkey's first action of the season for the Sharks.

The HPU offense fired 23 shots against the Saints, with goal keeper Ali Campigotto recording 11 saves and allowing five goals. The Saints had one team save as well on the Sharks 17 shots on goal.

The Sharks started the scoring barrage in the first half when Yoshioka converted a penalty kick in the eighth minute for the 1-0 lead. It was the freshman's second goal of the season and the week.

HPU added a second score 12 minutes later in the half as Lemus took a feed from Madrid, beat a defender at the top of the box and drilled the ball into the upper right corner of the net for her first goal of the year and a 2-0 Shark advantage.

After firing 13 shots at goal, HPU took the 2-0 lead into the half.

Coming out of intermission, the Saints fought off the Sharks until the 62nd minute when Lemus scored her second of the game. She received a pass from sophomore Jacey Iwane of Aiea, Hawai'i/Moanalua five-yards outside of the penalty box and smashed it over Campigotto in the upper right net for a 3-0.

HPU added more two minutes later. Junior Nina Gonzales of Palmdale, Calif./Knight was fed a cross from Madrid to the middle of the box and cashed in an open net score for her first goal of the year.

The Sharks picked up their final tally in the 86th minute when Yoshioka collected her third goal of the week and second of the game. Sophomore Brittny Ihara of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City fed the ball to the middle of the box and Yoshioka fired it to the left post for the goal.
