Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sharks Tie Chaminade 2-2 in Double Overtime

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University and Chaminade battled to a 2-2, double overtime draw in women's soccer action Thursday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex Field 5.

The Sharks (2-2-1) saw a two-goal lead evaporate in just a minute as the Silverswords (0-1-1) scored twice in the 68th and 69th minute.

HPU took the lead in 34th minute as freshman Kaylee Sumida of Honolulu/Moanalua scored her first career goal recovering the ball out of a scrum in front of the goal and blasting it in the net to take a 1-0 lead.

The Sharks added to their lead just after halftime when senior Ebony Madrid of Porterville, Calif./Ramstein (Germany) was taken down in the box to earn a penalty kick in the 50th minute. Madrid put the PK over the keeper for her fourth goal of the year and a 2-0 lead.

HPU seemed to have control of the match until the 68th minute when the Silverswords' Randi Fontes found an opening on the left side to score Chaminade's first goal.

Moments later, the Swords stole the ball in the midfield. April Barnes found a wide open Cailla Fabro who popped it in the net just 35 seconds after the first goal to knot the game at 2-all.

But neither team would score again.

The Sharks took 26 shots in the contest with CUH goalkeeper Namomi Takata chalking up eight saves with the two goals allowed.

The Swords got nine shots off, with HPU senior goalkeeper Gretchen Berkey of Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass collecting five saves with the two goals allowed.

The teams will meet again on Oct. 12 at St. Louis Field when Chaminade hosts the PacWest Conference contest.

HPU is back in action on Saturday when the Sharks travel to the Big Island to face Hawai'i Hilo in a non-conference contest. The kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. at the field on campus.
