HILO – Hawai'i Pacific University jumped out early and held momentum throughout the match as the Sharks ripped Hawai'i Hilo 3-1 in PacWest Conference play Sunday afternoon at Vulcan Gym.
The Sharks (5-5, 1-1) gave the Vulcans (5-5, 0-2) their second straight loss, winning 25-20, 25-19, 10-25, 25-19.
The Sharks were led by the powerful double-double of junior
Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge, who tallied a season-high 19 kills along with 12 digs to go with a block and a .268 hitting percentage. Senior
Perla Escobar of Calexico, Calif./Calexico just missed a double-double with nine kills and 13 digs, while sophomore
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah led the Sharks with four blocks. Ferris and junior
Sierra Piester of Carlsbad, Calif./Tri-City Christian each tallied eight kills, with Piester hitting .500 and chipping in three blocks.
The Vulcans were paced by Alexandria Parisian and Bria Beale with nine kills each, with Parisian adding four blocks. Emily Wade posted eight kills and led the match with seven blocks.
HPU rallied in the middle of the first set winning eight of 10 points to go up 18-14 and never looked back to win 25-20.
The Sharks posted three 5-point runs in the second set on the way to the 25-19 win.
The Vulcans broke open a 4-4 third set with a 9-point run and added a 7-point run to cruise to the 25-10 win.
But the Sharks and Vulcans battled it out in the fourth set. With UHH leading 17-16, a Vulcan service error started the Sharks on their biggest run of the match. The Sharks collected eight straight points, taking the set to 24-17. The Vulcans responded with two points before Piester ended the match with a kill to win 25-19.
The Sharks travel to California for a 5-game road swing that starts next Saturday at Fresno Pacific. The match is slated for Noon HST (3 p.m. PDT) at the FPU Special Events Center.
