FRESNO, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University opened up a five-match California road swing with a 3-0 PacWest Conference sweep of Fresno Pacific at the FPU Special Events Center Saturday afternoon.
The Sharks (6-5, 2-1) took down the Sunbirds (2-12, 1-4) 25-20, 25-20, 25-15.
The Sharks hit .295 for the match with five blocks, while the Sunbirds hit .125 with four blocks.
HPU was paced by junior
Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge, who matched a season-high with 19 kills with a .417 attack percentage, nine digs, a blocks and a service ace. Senior
Perla Escobar of Calexico, Calif./Calexico also just missed a double-double with nine kills and 15 digs. Sophomore
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah added eight kills, while junior
Abigail Wilmington of Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River led the Sharks with three blocks.
The Sunbirds got 12 kills from Corinne Acosta with a .171 hitting percentage. Miska Legatova added six kills. Mikayla Kennedy had three blocks for FPU.
The Sharks and Sunbirds swapped the lead four times in the first set. HPU trailed 7-6 when an FPU service error started a Sharks run of four straight points and five of six to claim an 11-8 lead on an Escobar kill and never trailed in the set again. A kill by sophomore
Makenna Gambee of Hillsboro, Ore./Hillsboro gave HPU the 25-20 set win.
The Sharks never trailed in the second set, and found the match tied at 1-1 and 2-2 before a kill from Collie started an 8-0 run on the way to the win. HPU led 20-12 when FPU rallied and used an 8-2 run to pull within 22-20. The Sharks put it away with three straight points capped by a double block from Collie and sophomore
Kirah Boynton-Brown of Vancouver, Wash./Union for the 25-20 second set win.
Fresno Pacific got the first two points in the third set before responded with three straight points to take a lead. The Sunbirds tied the Sharks at 5-5 and 8-8, but HPU rallied taking six of the next eight points to establish a lead it wouldn't relinquish. The Sharks, up 16-13, put the set away with a 7-0 run. HPU closed the door on a Wilmington kill for the 25-15 win and the match.
The Sharks travel to the Bay Area for their next four matches, starting against Holy Names on Monday. First serve is set for 4 p.m. HST (7 p.m. PDT) at Tobin Gym.
