HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University senior Emily Madrid scored with 17 seconds remaining in the second golden goal overtime led the Sharks to a 3-2 non-conference win over island rival Hawai'i Hilo Saturday afternoon on the UH Hilo campus.
The Sharks (3-2-1) got a second half hat trick from Madrid to beat the Vulcans (1-3-1) in the non-conference affair.
HPU trailed 2-0 at the half, with UH Hilo scoring on a Crystal Sanchez goal in the 16th minute and Nanea Wall following with a goal in the 30th minute.
The Sharks made a comeback in the second half.
Madrid, the senior from Porterville, Calif./Ramstein (Germany), got the Sharks on the board with her first goal of the game in the 59th minute off a feed from freshman
Callie Rheaume of Camas, Wash./Camas to make it 2-1.
HPU still trailed inside of the last 10 minutes of regulation when Madrid struck again in the 84th minute. The senior evened the score at 2-2, picking up a loose ball near the goal and pushing it across the line to knot the score.
Despite solid opportunities, neither team would score again in regulation and sent the game to overtime.
HPU had a chance to end the contest in the first golden goal period. Madrid had a penalty kick, but the shot went over the bar to keep the match alive.
In the second extra frame, both teams had opportunities but it was the Sharks that had the magic. Madrid picked up the ball in the middle of a scrum in front of the goal and rifled it in with 17 seconds remaining to stun the home team.
The trio of goals has Madrid at seven goals on the season, one of the PacWest's leaders, and her fourth goal of the week.

Marissa Froio of Simi Valley, Calif./Royal, came in at halftime and recorded six saves against 14 Vulcan shots. HPU senior starter
Gretchen Berkey of Grants Pass, Ore./Grants pass played the first half collecting five saves and allowing two goals on eight UHH shots.
Vulcan goalkeeper Bailey Cahill posted eight saves and allowed three goals against 21 shots by the Sharks.
The teams meet in PacWest Conference play in eight days when the Vulcans take on the Sharks on Sunday, Oct. 6 at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex Field 5. The match was moved to Field 5 because of maintenance on the Waipio Stadium field. Kickoff for the rematch is slated for Noon next Sunday. HPU will play at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Friday, Oct. 4, when the Sharks host Notre Dame de Namur in a 4:30 p.m. PacWest contest.
